Why me? Why do
I deserve the Sass? The answer...simply I'm ADDICTED. Hello, My name is
Melissa Lancaster, and I'm a DISCAHOLIC. Like most Canadians, when I first
heard of the sport I said "DISCO WHAT?" My partner at the time
(now my husband - DAN) lived on the west coast of British Columbia. That
is where I was first introduced to the sport, when I had moved there from
Ontario. As a beginner - it can be frustrating, and being the only girl,
discouraging. However, my competitive edge won over, I was NOT going to
let my husband always win. So I played more and more, impoving my skills,
catching up to the boys' scores and having LOTS more fun. Unfortunately,
after a couple of years we had to move back to Ontario. So when plotting
our route, it was by way of nearly every disc golf course between Victoria
BC and Brantford Ontario - a nice 3 week trip.
We were not settled very long before the itch to play kicked in. We soon
realized there were a number of courses to play, but were one hour or
more away from where we lived. This was simply not going to cut it...
have you seen the price of gas these days?! Dan and I decided to approach
the Brantford Parks and Recreation Dept about installing a course. Our
idea was very well received and now - We're building a COURSE! I raised
over $14,000.00 in sponsorship, we designed and installed an 18 hole course
and I am currently developing our club memebership and league. What a
great experience! I cannot wait to run our first tournament.
My addiction has also infiltrated my professional life. I am a high school
Physical Education teacher, and have had Disc Golf integrated into our
curriculum. I have taught disc golf in classes, at camps for children
and have been a presenter at the Ontario Federation of Secondary School
Atheletics - Women in Sport conference, where I taught teachers from across
the province how to teach disc golf in their classes. I beleive that I
share and demonstrate the vision of Sassy Pants. I had the pleasure of
meeting you both at the International Women's Cup and now I am convinced
I should be Sassy Pants Girl! With my exposure to the high school populations,
the new disc golfers in Ontario, my presence at sport conferences and
of course - our combined push for more women in this sport, think of the
exposure Sassy Pants could have in Ontario! Your vision, my enthusiasum
and some Canadian Sass - What a combination!
