What she wrote: I think I should
be the next recipient of the Pass-the-Sass fund because I am about to
explode like a hurricane in the Milwaukee area. I was first introduced
to disc golf in Stevens Point, WI in the fall of 1999. I enjoyed the sport
because I could be outside, enjoy nature while playing a competitive game.
As the years went on, I fell in love with a professional disc golfer.
he taught me about discs, shots, and how to look at the game. But my passion
for the game diminished. I thought I wasn't good anymore and my ex-boyfriend
only wanted to play disc golf all the time and, literally the whole idea
wore me out. Except for being surrounded by wonderful and friendly people
I gave up the game. I traveled to Japan to teach English in the summer
of 2004, and there is where my passion for the great sport resurrected
again. I spent my free time looking for disc golf courses and meeting
people who played the sport. How different it is from America to Japan.
The land of the Rising Sun helped me to reconnect with a sport that I
truly did love and treasure. After coming back to the states, my ex boyfriend
moved away and needless to say our 3-year relationship was over. I was
a graduate of Stevens Point and all my friends were gone on their adventures
and I returned lonely and money less. It was then I started to play disc
golf again. It was free and a place to leave my troubles and thoughts
behind and think about the future. I was a single woman, truthfully, playing
on a course with all men. I couldn't wait for the day to see another girl
on the course without her boyfriend or a group of men. As I got better
I decided to look around to see about any tournaments. Mainly I wanted
to meet more women in the Milwaukee area who had the same passion for
the sport as I do. I found Wham Bam Thank You AM, on the internet and
decided to give it a whirl. To my surprise a bunch of women decided to
come too- I even played a round with Melissa Christie, and had a blast
bonding with women and playing a sport I love. I placed 4th and was thrilled.
But everyone I meet lives either in Madison or somewhere else. I have
now started going to leagues in Milwaukee, but I am very disappointed-
I am 1 woman out of 75 men that play. I can't wait for a day when more
women play in Milwaukee. I promote disc golf to all my girlfriends and
women on the course but find all my hard work is not working. I am calling
out to all women who like to play and enjoy the sport who live in Milwaukee
area. I am learning new things everyday about the sport but have the confidence
finally to feel like I can play this awesome sport called disc golf.
